Before calling a 3d model done, especially if you're working for a company and passing the model to someone else, you should go through this modeling checklist to clean it up. Every pipeline of course has it's own specific things you need to do before calling the model done and ready to hand off, but this list should get you most of the way there with any piece of modeling software. So before saying your model is done, it's not done till it's been cleaned up, and I hope this list helps you do that.

The Modeling Checklist

  1. Is the model the Correct Real World Scale?
  2. Is the asset at the Origin?
  3. If some objects don't need to be separate objects, Combine them.
  4. Are the Objects Named? No Cube001.
  5. Does each object have appropriate Topology?
  6. Will your model be using all Subdivision Surfaces? If so, are all objectes setup properly?
  7. Have you Applied Any Modifiers that you no longer need as separate modifiers?
  8. Are the Pivots of each object in a good spot?
  9. Have you Frozen The Transforms (rotation is 0,0,0 and scale is 1,1,1?)
  10. Does everything have at least a Basic Material?
  11. Are the Materials Named?
  12. Do any objects that need UVs have them?
  13. Parent any objects that need to be parented for animation. Use Dummys / Emptys when necessary.
  14. Have you placed the objects on / in appropriate Layers / Collections?
