Pen On Glass

I got a lighting book called "Pro Lighting: Still Life", and it included this neat picture of a pen on glass. I've recently been doing studies in realistic lighting situations, and so figured I'd try and replicate the image in spirit if not in precise photorealism, although achieving something close to photorealism was the final goal. The results are mixed, it doesn't look like a photo, but achieving complete photoreal work is something that doesn't just happen overnight, so I suppose this image is just another step on the path. The amount of observation that went into trying to replicate this image is actually pretty crazy, I tried to replicate the lighting setup from the book as closely as possible. For example, instead of using standard specular highlights that tend to be round because they derive their shape from a point light source, I turned off all specular highlights, and instead used raytraced reflections to reflect self illuminated planes I placed in the scene in the same shape, position and orientation as the real lights in the scene, achieving those interesting highlights and reflections. I'll probably use further images from this book in the future to try and replicate.
