While mudbox's inter operability with photoshop is nice, it has
a number of disadvantages, such as it's inability to transfer 16bit
files between mudbox and pshop, inability too use your mudbox brushes
inside pshop, etc. In the long run, being able to paint on a 2d canvas
inside of mudbox where you have no file format incompatibilities and
complete access to all the mudbox tools would be ideal.
There is a feature currently called "Flatten to UV Space" that gets us
part of the way there, except you're still painting in the 3D view, and
tools like mirror don't work as expected. I'd like to see a new view
like the "UV View", but that allows you to paint on your model in 2D.
In this example, you have an overlay of the UVs you're painting on,
this overlay can be modified to be as transparent as you want.
