Layer And Mask Instancing:
Say you have a complex paint layer in the Bump channel. Now for
the Specular, you want to start with your bump channel, then darken it
a bit, and paint a few parts out. You can copy your Bump
channel to the Specular
channel, then adjust its color, then make a new layer in the Specular
channel and paint out the parts you don't want. But now, the director
wants you to revise your bump channel. You do so, but now you have to
manually recopy the Bump channel to your Specular
channel again, and redo your previous process.
This becomes very
cumbersome, especially when you have to do hundreds of iterations. And
many channels are usually slight variations of other channels. Needing
to modify a single channel could potentially require you to update a
dozen other channels.
Could we please have layer instancing added to mudbox. This would work
like this: You have a layer in your Bump map channel. You instance it
to your Specular channel. Now any paint you add to your
Bump layer will be automatically copied to your Specular
layer. And your color correction and extra layer to remove unneeded
parts of your Bump layer remain there sitting on top of the instanced
bump layer in the Specular channel. This
way, you are always up-to-date, and don't need to do any manual copying
anymore. Also Mask Instancing, so you cann paint a mask once and have
it connect to multiple layers in multiple channels.
