Don't Import Selection Sets:
So try this.
These Selection Sets don't seem to have any use, and they
clutter up the Object List. You can use Object List filters to hide
them, but could we please have an option in the import in mudbox to not
import these selection sets? Deleting them manually can take a lot of
time, since selecting the set also selects the object, so if your
object has a lot of geometry, it takes awhile to select the set to then
- Open 3dstudio max 2011.
- Create a few primitives like a box and a sphere
- Export the scene as obj, set the preset to "Mudbox".
- Open Mudbox 2012
- Import your obj file
- For each object it imports, it also imports a selection
set for your object, which you can see in your Object List. So you'll
have object Sphere001, but another entry for Selection Set Sphere001.

for it on the official Autodesk Wishlist. The top voted wishes will be
considered for future versions of max.
